Geography

It is organized around the Oudon, Argos and the Verzée. It is located at the crossroads of the axes Angers - Rennes and Nantes - Laval.

History

The name of Segré comes from Latin " Secretum" who means " isolé". As of highest antiquity, dwellings exist in Segré. In a site of rivers and hills, the tribes are fixed.

In Xesiècle, the first count d' Anjou Foulques the Russet-red made there build a first castle on the schistous spur which dominates the two rivers. It is not whereas a keep out of wooden raised on a ground hillock: a feudal mound which one can see still today.

In XIesiècle, the stone replaces wood gradually. In Segré, a new castle, equipped with a strengthened enclosure is built under Foulques the Black (Foulque Nerra). It will be taken in 1066 by the troops of Conan II of Brittany.

In 1191, Richard Lion-hearted, Count d' Anjou and king d' Angleterre, confiscates the grounds of Segré with Geoffroy of Guerche to constitute the field of his wife, Bérangère de Navarre.

In 1490, the city is destroyed once again by bands of plunderers which devastate all High-Anjou.

In 1589, the count of Rochepot, governor of Anjou, in the name of the king Henri III, seizes Segré which was up to that point with the hands of the members of a league. After having plundered the city, it makes dismantle the castle and the walls enclosing like all the strengthened manors of the region.

In 1635, the ground of Segré is set up in baronnie with the profit of one protected from Richelieu, Guillaume II of Bautru, lord of Louvaines.

In 1795, 2000 chouans invade the city defended by 200 republican soldiers. After 4 hours of combat, the Blue ones capitulate. The city is ransacked and 33 republican prisoners are cut the throat of.

With XIXesiècle and beginning of XXe, Segré knows a Net increase in population since the number of inhabitants passes from 700 in 1841 to 2894 in 1878, to 3551 in 1891 and 4874 in 1939. This increase is due, amongst other things, with the fastening of the commune of Aubin Saint of Pavoil, with the development of the railway network, the industrial expansion: mine iron and salte quarries.

On August 5th and 6th 1944, the Germans, in front of the American projection, set fire to the city and take an about sixty people as an hostage. Without the intervention of Under Prefect and the Archpriest, the latter were condemned.

Segré counts 7.155 inhabitants today. This industrial city with the mining past, iron and slate, had to face important changes. In 30 years, Segré obtained a diversified industry, services meeting the needs administrative, economic, school, medical and social, of a trade active and an sports equipment and cultural of quality.

Segré is a flowered city having obtained three flowers with the Concours of the cities and flowered villages with the prize list 2006.
