Scribing tool

The scribing tool is an instrument of Dessin intended to trace rectilinear features very precise thickness.

It is consisted two parallel metal branches, of more or less frayed form, punts on their face interior, and solidarized about their middle by an adjustable tangent. This unit is prolonged by a fine cylinder out of wooden, plastic or metal, even in Os, which allows handling of it the manner of a Crayon.

While turning the adjustable tangent, one brings closer or one draws aside the ends of the branches, which makes it possible to fix the thickness of the desired feature. One deposits Encre (Indian ink generally) or liquid color (gouache or acrylic resin suitably diluted) between the two branches, by means of a pipette, of a brush, or tanks designed and marketed filled to facilitate this operation. Lastly, one traces while following the edge of a rule or a square. The scribing tool is not used by a show of hands.

Scribing tools can be adapted to compass or balusters, so as to trace circles or arcs. Specific compasses are also designed on the same principle.

There exist several shapes of scribing tools, according to the use which in is made: end for the Technical design, thick and broad for decoration. On some, one of the branches can swivel on the axis of the adjustable tangent to facilitate cleaning.

The scribing tool was used in the industrial technical design and, in the drawing of Architecture, and in all the artistic disciplines which require rigorously rectilinear or circular features. It was supplanted in the technical fields by the fountain pens of China with tubular point, with standardized line weight, which yield the step to the computerized numerical drawing or Dessin computer-assisted . There remains however irreplaceable for certain applications.
