Say

In the Scandinavian Mythologie the say (Vieux norrois: to dísir ; in the singular: dís ) forms a whole of female divinities of which little is known, except they are associated with the Mort and the forfeiture.

Related terms

It is believed that dís is related with idisi , term found in the magic Formules of Mersebourg and with ides , a Anglo-Saxon term which indicates a Femme poetically. A possible etymology is Dhísanas , a group of divinities of the Yajur-Veda.

Dís could also be a title (lady or goddess), since Freyja is called Vanadís , i.e. “dís of the Vanes”. This title also applies to Alfhild.
