The Notre-Dame abbey
History
Based on April 6th, 1128 jointly by Gaston IV the Crusader, Viscount of Béarn, on the point to take the departure to take part in the crusade in Spain, its wife and her son, and placed under the term of Notre-Dame. By granting to the Benedictines this ground of “Sylva lata” (Séube Lade as old inhabitant of Béarn), whose historians discussed if it meant: " forest profonde" , " forest of Laà" or " forest rivets gauche".The abbey took, with an unspecified date, but in any case before 1286, the name of Saint-Jacob, its frequentation by the jacquets signs.
The abbey was taken again in 1286 by the cistercians of Gimont (Gers), and, consequently, its role in the reception of the pilgrims probably declined, because it is known that the disciples of Bernard saint hardly supported the worship of the relics and the pèlerinages.
Devastated in 1569 by the huguenots, raised in 1630 by the Counter-Reformation.
The Revolution made abbey parish church and sold the monastery.
Dilapidated, it has just been repurchased and restored by the commune, with the assistance of the department, to be used as arts center, allowing lodging.
Description
The abbey, of the 12th century, on the pastoral edges of Laà, has a form of Greek cross, already visible of outside with the very harmonious roofs in cascade: slate cone on the cupola of transept crossing, sides of tiles punts to horse on the four arms, the staircase, absidioles, the sacristy. The interior is of a beautiful examination cistercian, except the furnace bridges of a naive rural baroque and the stoup, fact of a barrel of column between two Corinthian capitals, vestiges undoubtedly of a villa romaine.
At side, the vast monastery of the 17th century.
