Industry of earthenware
The reputation of the Faïence of Sarreguemines is not any more to make. In two centuries, small family industry born with the Revolution made way. Many amateurs of these merry and coloured parts are disseminated a little everywhere in the world. Paul Utzschneider and Paul of Geiger, true one-man bands, propelled the small town to the very first row of faience industry: as of XIXe century, Sarreguemines proposes in the whole world a vast earthenware collection, vases, cover, mural frescos, chimneys… The activity begins in 1790. Nicolas-Henri Jacobi and two others associated install the first manufacture. However, the economic situation is hardly favorable. Jacobi then buys a mill with oil which it transforms into mill of ballasting located in edge of river, but its good will is not enough: the difficulties of supply raw materials, the hostility and the mistrust of the inhabitants, the competition of English and French manufactures and the disorders of the Revolution push Jacobi to yield the place…
