Saratov
Saratov , town of Russia. Chief town of the Oblast de Saratov, located at 858 km in the south-east of Moscow, on Right Bank of the the Volga (water tank of Volgograd). Rail junction and important truck driver, river port, international airport. Population: 866 600 inhabitants in 2001.
Founded in 1590, the city was to be used as fortress defending trade route of the Volga. After the fire of 1613, the fortress was rebuilt on left bank of the Volga, with the confluence with Saratovka. It is into 1674 that the city was moved to occupy its current site. Chief town of the general government of Saratov in 1780, then of the province of Saratov.
Saratov is a diversified important industrial center, and the seat of many cultural and teaching institutions, of which the Alliance Fran1caise.
