Santa Marta
Santa Marta is the capital of the department of Magdalena in Colombia. It was founded on July 29th, 1525 (festival of Holy Marthe, from where its name) by Rodrigo de Bastidas. It is the first city built by the Spanish in South America.
It was often dévalisée by the Pirate S.
Its population was of 521482 in 2000 and is an important port city today. It is the capital of the department of Magdalena. It is known for its beaches and to be with a few kilometers only of the snow-covered Sierra.
Simon Bolivar died there, after a long battle against the Tuberculose, on December 17th 1830. The footballer helvético-Colombian Johan Vonlanthen was born there, just like the footballer emblematic of Colombia: Carlos Alberto Valderrama known as " El Pibe".
