Polemics and Anecdotes

Like any referee, it must support a certain number of polemics.

  • It was the auteure of a overrule discussed at the time of the finale of the Open of Australia 2004 between the Belgians Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters. With *3/4 in the third set, Clijsters had to defend a ball of station-wagon. Its right blow in the beginning was considered good, but of Jenken overrula, thus giving a decisive station-wagon to Henin, which gained the match over its setting concerned following. The system Hawk-Eye showed that the ball touched the line very slightly. Sandra de Jenken justified her overrule by affirming that it " no doubt in connection with the décision" had absolutely; ( " I cuts absolutely No doubt butt the cal. Afterwards, the two people working down At courtside told me it was year excels call" ), also pointing the fact that the system Hawk-Eye has a margin of error and is not infallible (the impact was in the margin of error of the system). One reproached him for being let influence by Henin, but she answered that she had overrulé before Henin raises the finger to mark its dissension.

  • At the time of the finale of the Open of Australia 2002 between Jennifer Capriati and Martina Hingis, the American one was caught some verbally with it. For some reason, Sandra de Jenken preferred not to give him a warning, and Capriati ended up gaining the match.

  • With Wimbledon 2007, at the time a match point in favor of American the Serena Williams vis-a-vis Australian the Alicia Molik, a right blow of Molik was judged " out" , but none of the two players noticed the call, and they continued the exchange, finally gained by Serena Williams. Whereas the two players were going to tighten the hand with the net, Sandra de Jenken is descended from her chair to explain the situation to them and to inform Alica Molik which it could " challenger" the first call thanks to the Hawk-Eye. After checking, the right blow was well outside and the match was declared finished. It seems that Sandra de Jenken made the good choice by informing the Australian one of her rights, and if the two players saw no disadvantage there, the polemic was launched by Richard Williams, father and trainer of Serena Williams. He declared with the press that “the referee had exceeded the authority which is normally granted to him”, in “encouraging” Molik has challenger the call, and found that his/her daughter had been almost flouée. He then added that Sandra de Jenken should be “ Persona non grata ”.
