The sand , or arena , is a Sedimentary rock piece of furniture, consisted of small particles coming from the disintegration of others Roche S whose dimension lies between 0,063 and 2 Misters.

Characteristics

An individual particle is called grain of sand . Sands are classified according to their Granulométrie (size of the grains).

Sand is characterized by its capacity to run out. The rounder the grains are, the more sand runs out easily. The artificial sand, obtained by cutting or mechanical crushing of rocks, is mainly made up of grains to the marked asperities. One can also differentiate a sand which was transported by the wind of a sand transported by water. First is of form more angular than the second which is rounder. Moreover, the blow sand has a color more opaque than more translucent watery sand, had with the multiple impacts which air sand during its transport undergoes.

Sand is often the product of the decomposition of the Granite because of erosion. Thus, most frequent of its components is the quartz, the least liable to deterioration component of the granite.

The grains of sand are enough light to be transported by the Vent and the Eau. They accumulate then to form Plage S, dunes. A strong wind which takes care out of sand is a “Sandstorm”.

Sand can have several colors according to its nature: sand black, white (Gypse, White Sands).

Use

Sand is used to make Béton and like raw material of the Verre. It can be used for to filter the liquids.

Because of its facility of handling, it is also employed when one needs to convey matter (it does not matter its nature) in a place, for example to be used as ballast or to protect (sandbag against the glares of Explosion and the balls).

Sand is also an important component of tourism industry, when it is present on the Plage S and the Dune S where it is also an element essential to the protection of the coast.

Ecological problems

In much from country sand is extracted directly from the beaches or from careers being next to the beaches. The requirements in construction for new housing often lead to the wild extraction of sand without regard for the ecological consequences. These consequences are often serious, disappearance of the beaches in certain places, disfiguration of the landscapes, salinification of the ground water. Moreover legal measurements are often inoperative because the potential profits are so important that it is easy to corrupt the official charged ones to apply them.

The alternatives are the dredging of the ports and the river beds to extract sand, although there too the ecological consequences are important. Another alternative is the crushing of tender rocks to make sand of it, but the disadvantage here is the cost. In the future, it is advisable to seek more ecological methods of construction which avoid the use of sand (composite material or timber constructions, out of steel, etc) although that is not possible in all the parts of the world.

Expressions

Sometimes a grain of sand is enough to block the operation of a Mécanisme; by extension, the term indicates a small disturbance blocking a whole system (human organization, strategy, doctrinaire approach…).

The Bac with sand is a place of play for children; it indicates by extension the childish medium (“terrors of the sand vats”, Morgane of you , Renaud) or a place of training. See also Wikipédia: Sand vat
