San Lorenzo Nuovo

San Lorenzo Nuovo is a common of the Province of Viterbe in the area Latium in Italy.

Geography

San Lorenzo Nuovo, which is on a hill with approximately 550 meters above the sea level, is an agricultural center near to the Lac of Bolsena.

The commune is at the point of meeting of the Via Cassia (the road which goes from Rome to the Toscane) and the road Maremmana (which goes from Orbetello and Pitigliano to Orvieto).

The village, different from the other agglomerations in the vicinity which are typically medieval, has an historical center of neo-classic architecture of the 18th century. It is characterized by dwellings similar and relatively low, dominated by the church of San Lorenzo vis-a-vis a great octagonal place (piazza Europa).

A portion of the beach of the lake (San Lorenzo Al Lago) belonged to the commune.

History

The village was founded in 1774 by the inhabitants of the old borough of San Lorenzo Grotte ale after having given up the agglomeration located at the edge of the Lac of Bolsena and subjected to the malaria.

Festivals, fairs

June 24th Holy Jean Baptist. the fair of Jean Saint is a great popular demonstration of medieval origin. It is held all the day of June 24th atour central place. Until the years 1800s the same fair was held close to the lake where was the church of San Giovanni in Valley di Lago (of which the remainders are still today).

August 10th Saint Laurent, martyr. the god of the owner who gives his name to the commune unrolls the solemn procession - it is a tradition which remains long time. On the basis of the church of San Lorenzo, the statue of the Saint is carried in the streets of the city. The following day, finally, takes place the traditional fair.

September 14th Exaltation of the Holy Cross. the local Christian tradition celebrates the woody crucifix of the 12th century which is in the church of San Lorenzo. Religious holiday is celebrated each year, but they is only every 15 years (probably since 1787) that is held a solemn procession, while carrying the crucifix in the streets of the city sumptuously equipped, in memory of when the statue was carried processionnellement from the old village to the parish church of the new municipality (October 12th, 1778). This event which one celebrates from one decade and half to another, called " Festone" (Large-Festival), is held during all of summer with traditional and convivial festivals. The Festone last took place in 1997. In 2000, in front of the Great Jubilee, the civil authorities and religious decided however to organize an exceptional procession.
