The furrow-Sambre-and-Meuse is the apparent part of what the Belgian geologists call the fault of midday: an important line rupture to locate at northern limit of the solid mass of midday (Condroz-Ardenne) appeared to the Paleozoic . This zone of rupture extends in straight line on the course taken by Sambre and the Meuse (between Namur and Liege). Further in the east this fault is covered with sediment (dating mainly from the Mesozoic ). The furrow Sambre and Meuse separates the plains from Haineaut and Hesbaye of the more broken areas of the condroz and the ardenne.
the Walloon dorsal : The furrow Sambre and Meuse crosses the north of the Wallon territory and seems structured like a spinal column. Logically the oldest axis of communication of the area the road " romaine" Bavay-Cologne was formed him parallel to and it is also the case today of the E42 highway and the railway line Liege-Lille. These axes of terrestrial communications one prolonged the sillion towards the west (hatred and Sambre) but also towards the east country of Herve and the valley of Vesdre, thanks to the axis Tongres-Truce.
Logically it is in this zone served well in means of communication that the economic activity developed and or was established major the part of the population. It was particularly the case during the industrialization of our areas where it was discovered and exploitat the coal that the creation of the furrow Sambre and Meuse had trapped.
The Walloon industrial furrow, Hatred-Sambre-Meuse-Vesdre furrow

On this furrow approximately two thirds of the Walloon population live, that is to say two million hearts. Its principal section is the Sillon Sambre-and-Meuse (or Charleroi-Liege). This area saw the explosion of many Grève S general carried out either with aims or social, or political: in 1886 (economic crisis, lowers wages, unemployment), 1893 (fight for the Vote for all), 1902 (fight for the vote for all), 1913 (fight for the vote for all), 1932, 1936, 1950 (royal Question), and the General strike of the winter 1960-1961 where the autonomy of Wallonia was the first massively claimed time. It is the political base of the Belgian socialist party in Wallonia, the place of the most savage opposition to Léopold III. Some consider it sometimes as the hypothetical space of a Polyville which would be the Walloon Métropole.
