The Salinas Grandes of Jujuy in Argentine are small a salar or salt desert located on the high plateau of the province of Jujuy. The salar prolongs in fact towards south-west the Laguna de Guayatayoc. Its surface is of more or less 12 000 hectares, is 120 km ². The site is with approximately 3 350 meters of altitude.
It is about a salt extent in the form of hard crust, a 30 centimetres thickness. One can drive car on his surface. It is of a dazzling whiteness, and forms with the sky, almost always blue, a landscape of a seizing beauty.
Since 2005, a beautiful tarred road carries out to it directly on 190 kilometers at the beginning of San Salvador de Jujuy, the trunk road N° 52. This road (road of Paso de Jama towards the Chile) passes by Purmamarca from where there remain only 120 kilometers. It is necessary to count two hours of road on the whole. Salinas Grandes are on the level of the small town of Abra de Potrerillo.
