Saliers (Rhone delta)

Saliers is a village of approximately 350 inhabitants located at the North-West of the the Camargue on the commune of Arles.

History

In the Middle Ages, the Templiers about 1170, then the Hospitaliers of Saint-Jean-of-Jerusalem in XIVe century established a commandery there.

During the last world war between 1942 and 1944, a camps of internment for the gipsies was installed near the village.

Today, the village of Saliers is still the center of an agricultural zone, primarily dedicated to rice growing and the breeding, with beautiful old farmhouses as those of Beaujeu de Castres or Leotaud.
