Sainte-Marie , sometimes called Holy-Marie-with-Beauce , is a city of the Quebec located in MRC of the News-Beauce, of which it is the chief town, in the area of the Boiler-Appalachian Mountains. It belongs to the traditional area of the Beauce.
It is located at 40km in the south of the town of Quebec. It holds its name of Marie-Claire Fleury of Gorgendière, marries first lord of Sainte-Marie, Thomas-Jacques Taschereau, with whom it seigniory was conceded in 1736.
Sainte-Marie is a center industrial, commercial and agricultural important whose influence extends in all the surrounding area.
Geography
The presence of the Rivière Boiler which crosses Sainte-Marie is the most outstanding element of the territory. 70% of the surface are devoted to the agricultural activity.
History
The seigniory of Holy-Marie-of-the-News-Beauce, so called Taschereau of the name of its first owner, was conceded in 1736. The parish founded in 1737 and was set up canonically in 1835. The majority of the first colonists came from the island of Orleans and the Côte of Bowsprit.
As in many localities of Quebec, the more urbanized part (it village ) from the parish in 1913 separated, obtained the statute of city in 1958 and the two parts again met in 1978.
Trade and industries
The industrial sector of Sainte-Marie takes part in famous whose Beauce as one enjoys the economic centers most dynamic of Quebec. Sainte-Marie is the heiress of a tradition of mutual aid (famous the drudgeries ) and of work.
Equipped with two industrial parks located in edge of the Highway 73, Sainte-Marie holds 60% of the industrial employment in the MRC of the News-Beauce. She is particularly recognized as being the city of the cakes Vachon . The company was founded there in 1923.
