History
It was initially populated by a tribe Algonquine which made the culture of the corn there (Indian corn in Québécois Argot), thereafter, the October 7th 1535, Jacques Cartier planted a Croix on the island thus proclaiming French sovereignty of this territory. It will be necessary to wait nearly one hundred years, so that the father Paul LeJeune notices there the ruins of a Amerindian Palissade and some cleared Arpent S where the Amerindian cultivated corn. Thus the June 2nd 1647, the governor of Montmagny allowed François Marguerie, Jean Véron of Grandmesnil and Claude David to clear the island, one called then it Grandmesnil island and was thus designated like ground with Roture. But Véron of Grandmesnil died shortly after and the island was re-elected during a time: Trinidad. At the beginning of the Years 1660, François Marguerie having bequeathed his ground to his/her Marie sister (widowed in first wedding of Jacques Hertel and wife of Quentin de Moral said Saint-Quentin) in 1652, the island was definitively renamed Saint-Quentin island. The natural environment of the Saint-Quentin island remained almost unchanged, practically unutilised with the XVIIIe century and until the end of the XIXe century. Starting from the Years 1930, the entertaining aspect of the island took importance, the island which belonged at the time with the Quebec Savings and Trust Company Limited as to the Canada Power and Paper Corporation have an purchase offer of the City in 1933 but it was necessary to wait the November 3rd 1947 so that the ground is property of the city. Meanwhile, it was used as camp of drive for the Canadian royal Marine. Services were gradually set up in 1950. The park and the beach of the Saint-Quentin island officially were inaugurated the June 24th 1962, in the presence of 5.000 people, year when one counted more than 100.000 visitors Since, the island underwent several installations including one Marina, a cycle Track, a Sentier of interpretation, a Patinoire and a Camping.
