Saint-Paulien (Haute-Loire)

Saint-Paulien is a common French, located in the department of the Haute-Loire and the area Auvergne.

Geography

History

The various names of this city were:
  • Ruessio. - Celtic

  • Ruessium - Gallo-Roman
  • Vellava - episcopal City, at the end of the Roman domination
  • Civitas Vetula after the translation of évêché in Puy.
  • Holy Paulien after last devastations of Norman and the construction of the current city.

Antiquity
  • IIe front century J. - C.: The people of the Vellaves settle in current the Velay. Vellaves ( Vellavi in Latin), whose name would mean “ Montagnards ” or “ Those which dominate ” and which Jules César qualifies fighters, belong to the Confederation of the Arvernes ( Velauni which sub imperio Arvernorum ess consueverant written César). They build to them Oppidum on the plate which dominates the castle of Rochelambert and overhangs the rivers Borne and Gazeille. They name this place Ruessio (or Reuessione ).

Personalities related to the commune

  • Pierre JULIEN (June 20th 1731 with Saint-Paulien - December 17th 1804 with Paris): Large sculptor. The king Louis XVI called it at his court and order of sculptures of great men of France placed to him. The school of Saint-Paulien is called school Pierre Julien.
