Saint-Joire

Saint-Joire is a common French, located in the department of the Meuse and the area Lorraine.

Geography

History

Saint-Joire draws his name from saint Georges, owner of the parish.

The territory of Saint-Joire is occupied as of the Neolithic .

Located near Nasium city Gallo-Roman of importance (10 to 15000 inhabitants at the 2nd century.) being reproduced on the table of Peutinger, one notes the passage on the commune of the Roman way of Nasium to the sanctuary of Grand (in the the Vosges).

In 1586 Saint-Joire depends on prévôté on Andelot.

In 1636, by twice, the village is dévasté :

  1. first once on July 22nd, 1636 by part of Lorraine cavalry to the orders of Mr. d' Hagecourt, Captain of the guards of the Duke Charles IV. Lorraine riders (or Crouaste S) considering the village as enemy country with the subject which it is of France and the Bailliage of Chaumont .
  2. second once the day before Christmas of the same year, a Swedish troop (allied of France) occupied the village during forty days.

On the whole, 53 houses are entirely destroyed as well as part of the church and house seigneuriale  ; the blast furnace, the market and the forging mill are entirely ruined. There remain nothing any more but 40 inhabitants who have neither cattle any more, neither horses, nor grains as attests it Domp Pierre Froussote religious and gruyer of the Abbey of Are worth in Ornois.

In 1790, during the formation of the departments, Saint-Joire which belonged to the Champagne is attached to the department of the Meuse and thus to the Lorraine.
