Saint-Genest-Malifaux

Saint-Genest-Malifaux is a common French, located in the department of the the Loire and the area the Rhone-Alps. The inhabitants are called Genesiens.

Geography

The commune of Saint-Genest-Malifaux is located on a plate, below the solid mass of Pilat. The common neighbors are Saint-Romain-the-Atheux, Saint-Etienne, Planfoy, Tarentaise, Versanne, Saint-Govern-of-Corner and Jonzieux.

Saint-Genest-Malifaux is with the crossroads old provinces, Forez, Vivarais and Velay, and on an important axis connecting the plain of Drill with the valley of the the Rhone by the collar of Republic or Large-Wood collar.

History

Saint Genest was a martyr decapitated at the end of the 2nd century. The discovery in 1970 of flint to the foot of a way which dominates the source of Make Ria testifies to a human presence at the time prehistoric.

But it is at the 11th century that the name appears for the first time on the constitutive instrument of the priory of Saint-Saver-in-Street.

At the 15th century, a church was to build in the Gothic style auvergnat on the directives of this abbey.

At the 12th century, Saint-Genest, pledged with Drill, joined the crown of France.

At the beginning of the 16th century, the church was entirely rebuilt and completed in 1507. It was deeply altered at the 19th century.

During 18th and 19th century, the multiplication of the mills for the work of wood and textile industry supported the economic advancement and demographic commune. In 1832, the trunk road 82, making it possible to join the valley of the the Rhone, was inaugurated, placing the commune on an important axis.

  • Stopping of Saint-Genest-Malifaux or stopping of the dishes

Built on the course of the Semène. Work started in 1957 pout to make it possible to provide for the needs for the area of Firminy. A sawmill " Sawmill of Trappe" will be absorbed by the new lake. More recently, the stopping was emptied to carry out renovation works. The vestiges of this sawmill are thus visible in 2007.

Economy

Primarily, Agriculture of average Mountain, exploitation of the Wood, Tourism and some industrial plants. Recently, the commune urbanized with the arrival of inhabitants working with Saint-Etienne, and in the valleys industrialists of Gier and Ondaine which is only with a few kilometers.
