History

The shortly after the Second world war, the French government aimed to ensure the autonomy of the country on a certain number of strategic sectors. It was in particular decided to create a company whose vocation would be to design diesel engines for the marine propulsion, railway traction and the generation of electricity.

In 1946, the SEMT was created, with at its head, the engineer German motor mechanic Gustav Pielstick and his assistant Leonard Geislinger. This company partly rested on the knowledge to make German, since it was a question of adapting the diesel engine MAN 40/46 which equipped the U-Boot with the Kriegsmarine.

At that time the SEMT did not have any means of production and marketed its engines through a network incipient from bachelors. In 1951, the SEMT obtained its first testing ground and launched out in the development of its fast engines PA1 and semi fast PC1. The first engines were marketed starting from 1953.

The diesel engines which are built there have various applications: marine propulsion (civil and military), rail-bound transport and terrestrial electrical production.
