Rue de la République (Marseilles)
The street of the Republic , before Imperial street , is a Marseilles street on the basis of the quays of the Old man-Port in direction of the Joliette. It thus connects the old one and the new port.
Its boring at the end of the 19th century in the old frame and the thickness of the hill required the destruction of 935 houses and disappearance partial or total of 61 streets. It was inaugurated in 1864.
It was arranged with dwellings of style haussmannien in order to make return the Marseilles middle-class close to the center town. However, perhaps this one did not appreciate it the proximity of the port and the ceaseless port activities of this time which go with, always is it that it did not settle there.
Today the street of the Republic requires an urgent restoration. The neighbouring residences are for the majority of the residences has moderate rent accommodating a rather underprivileged population. This street made speak about it beginning 2005; indeed pension funds American bought the residences bordering in order to renovate them in turn. What causes joy at some and anxiety at others.
