Rudolf Emil $kalman (born on May 19th 1930) is a mathematician and a control engineer American of Hungarian origin , engineer in electrotechnical of formation. He is especially known for his contribution to the invention of the Filtre of $kalman, a mathematical technique of filtering very much used automatically to extract a signal starting from disturbed measurements.

The ideas of $kalman on filtering met a certain skepticism, so much so that it had to initially publish his work in a newspaper of mechanics (instead of electrical engineering). He had more success, however, when he met Stanley Schmidt with the Ames Research Center of NASA in 1967. That led to the use of the filters of $kalman for the program Apollo.

It was born with Budapest in Hungary. It obtained its bachelor (license) in 1953 and its master (1954) with the Massachusetts Institute off Technology in electric engineering. It obtained its doctorate in 1957 with the Columbia University. Then he worked as researcher in mathematics with the Research Institute for Advanced Study, with Baltimore, of 1958 to 1964. From 1964 to 1971 he was professor with the Université of Stanford, then Graduate Research Professor and director, with the Center for Mathematical System Theory, with the University of Florida, Gainesville of 1971 to 1992. As from 1973, it occupies the pulpit of System theory Mathematical to EPFZ (Federal Polytechnic school of Zurich).

It accepted the medal of honor of the IEEE in 1974, the medal centenary of the IEEE in 1984, the Prix of Kyoto in high technology of the Inamori foundation in 1985, the Steele price of the American Mathematical Society (1987), and the Prix Bellman (1997).

It is a member of the National Academy off Sciences, National Academy off Engineering, and American Academy off Arts and Sciences (the United States). He is foreign member of the Academies of Science of Hungary, France and Russia.

He is married in Constantina Stavrou. They have two children, Andrew and Elisabeth.
