The Royal Society off Edinburgh - Company royal of Edinburgh - is the Academy of Science and letters of Scotland.

It counts more 1  400 members elected by their pars. Its members can add FRSE to their name (Fellows off the Royal Society off Edinburgh). The company distributes more one 1,7 million books per annum. The company organizes readings and the promotion of sciences in the Scottish schools.

With the difference of many Academies of Science in the world, Royal Society off Edinburgh comprises a section letters and Histoire.

History

At the beginning of the 18th century the intellectual climate of Edinburgh supports the creation of many learned societies. Several of them treat arts, sciences and the medicine, most prestigious is the Philosophical Society founded in 1738. With the assistance of the University of Edinburgh of the professors like Joseph Black, William Cullen and John Walker, this first company is transformed into Royal Society off Edinburgh. In 1786 it publishes its first newspaper Transactions off the Royal Society off Edinburgh .

At the end of the 18th century, certain members among young people embrace the new nomenclature of Lavoisier, the generated divergences of opinion lead to the creation of the Wernerian Society , (1808 - 1858), a parallel organization centered on the Natural history and the scientific research which could be applied to improve agriculture and Scottish industry. Under the impulse of Robert Jameson, this company publishes the Memoirs off the Wernerian Natural History Society of 1808 with 1821 then the Edinburgh Philosophical Journal starting from 1822. During the quarantes first years of the 19th century two publications thus coexist in Edinburgh. In the Years 1850, the influence of Jameson and its partner David Brewster decreases and the two companies can again unify their members in only one publication.

During the 19th century the company counts many influential members in the foundation of modern sciences. Its current president is Michael Atiyah.
