History

The creation of the city goes up at the time Roman, which names it Rubeaquum (red water), because of the presence of a source of water, ferruginous, giving him this color. The city becomes thereafter, at the 5th century, a residence of the kings mérovingiens of Austrasie who build the castle of Isenbourg. At the 7th century, the city knows a miracle: the bishop of Strasbourg, Arbogast, ressuscite the son of the king Dagobert II, which offers, grateful, the city with the prince-bishop of Strasbourg. The city then becomes the capital of the possessions of évêché, in the form of Haut-Mundat, of which also formed Eguisheim part. The city experiences a strong development which allows the construction of an enclosure. The golden age knows an abrupt stop, with the Thirty Year old war, the city is devastated by the Swedes. At the conclusion of the war and annexation of Alsace by France, Haut-Mundat is removed. The city finds then prosperity, in particular thanks to its vineyard and remains saved by the following wars.
