Root
The root is the point of connection of an element on a structure which carries it.
Aeronautics
In aeronautics, the root is the zone of fixing of the aerofoil on the fuselage. It is the point of rigid support of the members or the boxes of aerofoil on the level of the fuselage.Through the root circulate all the electrical circuits, hydraulics and tires intended for the operation of landing the gears of the control surfaces (ailerons, nozzles, shutters, spoilers etc), or warming of the Leading edge (anti-icing), lighting of the side-lights. Fuel pipings connecting the inboard tanks to the fuselage with the engines fixed at the wings cross also the root.
Dorsal fairing. The zone of junction wing-fuselage can receive an aerodynamic careenage which can be prolonged forwards by brushes ( strake in English), and/or backwards (careenage Karman). The airliners present a ventral careenage under the fuselage receiving in particular the wheels of the landing gear. This careenage is prolonged towards the back for aerodynamic reasons (Loi of the surfaces).
tank S external (known as " conformes") can also marry the shape of the fuselage and the aerofoil as on the Rafale of Dassault Aviation.
Navy
In the navy this term indicates primarily the low fixing of the Mât in the hull.
