Romedenne

Romedenne (in Walloon Rômedene ) is a section of the Belgian city of Philippeville located in Walloon region in the Province of Namur.

It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.

History

Old hamlet of Surice set up in commune in 1901. Probably dependence of the seigniory of Florennes to the Middle Ages, like Surice.

Large village surrounded by wood, set fire to in 1914. Old core centered by the main street, since the church to the Saint-Pierre fountain. In bottom in the South, railway line Morialmé - Givet created in 1862 and closed down in 1971, towards which the village extended. At side a brickyard which has just ceased its activities. Close to the Saint-Pierre fountain, one can visit the European museum of the trucks of brewery.

Origin of " The Festival of the Wheelbarrow of Romedenne"

In 1984, at a meeting, the youth of Romedenne seeks an idea for redynamiser the festival of the village, they decided to set up a first edition of the race of Brouette at the time of the festival of the village. Would he have imagined that this festival with the passing of years was going to take an increasingly important notoriety in the area? In 1987-88, the three founding members disappear. In 1990, the youth of the village decides to the great displeasure organize a tournament of Catch to naked center of the local priest. It sent a letter to all the inhabitants of Romedenne in their predicting that a great misfortune was going to fall down on the capital at the time of this tournament. Following this intervention, it was called " the Priest of Cucugnan " and generated a beautiful publicity around this event. In 1991, in order to profit from the capital of Philippeville, youth decides to change the date of the festivities and becomes definitively the first weekend of August. Beginning of the era of the Playback which opened the evening of Saturday, this activity will last 5 years. In 1993, date birthday, the festival of the wheelbarrow is 10 years old. For this event a large fireworks is planned which will be cancelled following the death of the king Baudouin. In 1996, the festival becoming extensive more and more and the capital becoming too small, an outdoor part was assistant of the capital. In 1998, it is fifteenth; for this birthday, youth wanted to mark the blow and an insane idea was subjected by the vice-president J. - M. Vandesteene : to carry out the largest wheelbarrow of the world. There was one which was carried out in the the Jura, this wheelbarrow measured 14,25 Mr. youth with the many voluntary ones completes this titanic task. It is the August 1998 that the usher will note measurements of the exploit, a 17,36 m length, a 5,54 m height, of a width of 5,16 m and a weight higher than 2 Tons 760 kg, Romedenne enters the Livre Guinness of the records with its larger Brouette in the world!
