Roman Mythology

The Roman mythology made up Legend S and of the Myth S of the Roman Religion practiced in the ancient Rome.

The Roman Mythology, of Indo-European origin, borrowed from the wire of the centuries of the religious and cultural designs to the countries which were integrated little by little in the sphere of Rome: the Greece, the Egypt, the Syria, etc the Romans were adapted then digested these mythologies to create a syncretic unit which is clean for them.

The Mythe S strictly italo-Romans are very few, and relate primarily to the foundation of the Cités. One knows in particular no Cosmogonie nor Théogonie of Roman origin.

The majority of the divinities of the the Roman Pantheon comes from the ancient Greece and supplanted the local divinities (or “indigètes”), with some rare exceptions. For this reason the article devoteds to with the Roman gods of Greek origin are treated with their Greek equivalent.

  • Luna : goddess of the Moon, associated with Diane;
  • Lupercus : god of the herds;
  • Mars: god of the war, the combat;
  • MATER Matuta: beneficial marine goddess;
  • Mercury: messenger of the gods;
  • Minerve : goddess of the techniques, the right combat and wisdom;
  • Neptune : god of the seas and the oceans;
  • Orcus : god or messenger of Death;
  • Pluto: god of the Hells;
  • Priape : protective god of the orchards and the vineyards, personification of virility;
  • Proserpine : queen of the Hells;
  • Quirinus : form divinized of Romulus;
  • Salus : goddess of health;
  • Saturn: god of time;
  • Ground: former god sun, are equivalent of Hélios;
  • Sylvain: god of the drill in Roman mythology;
  • Tellus : goddess personifying the Earth in formation. It is the maternal ancestor of the gods and monsters;
  • Terra : goddess-mother, personification of the Earth (Greek equivalent Gaïa);
  • Uranus : god-father, personification of the Sky;
  • Venus: goddess of the beauty and the love;
  • Vesta : goddess of the hearth;
  • Vulcan: god of fire and iron, blacksmith of the gods.
