Childhood

Roger Waters is born in Great Bookham on September 6th, 1943, in the Surrey. His/her father, Eric Fletcher Toilets, takes part in the combat of the Second world war and is killed with Anzio, in 1944, during the Opération Shingle. The traumatism related to died of his/her father will mark his compositions durably, in particular the albums The Wall (1979) and The Final Cut (1983), which is dedicated to him.

Roger Waters then only lives with his mother and his 2 older brothers. It is with the college of Cambridge that it becomes acquainted with Syd Barrett and Nick Mason. In 1963, it founds a first group with Richard Wright, Nick Mason, Bob Klose, Juliette Gale (future Mrs Wright) and Keith Noble the " Sigma 6" who will be also called, according to the mood or the inspiration of the moment, " Architectural The Abdabs" or " The Tea Set". David Gilmour joined them at the beginning of 1968; it is the beginning of Pink Floyd.

With Pink Floyd

They are considered at their beginning as a rather experimental group which touches especially a medium of initiates. The film More , of which they carry out the music in 1969 at the request of the realizer Barbet Schroeder, makes known their music with more many people which reserve warm welcome at one time to him when the Beatles precisely slow down their production pace. The album Meddle will be also a success.

In 1970, Roger Waters composes and interprets with Ron Geesin the soundtrack of documentary on the human body, The Body , including/understanding a mixture of electronic sounds very rates/rhythms, human voices and… of various body noises mixed with the unit (in particular in the beach Our Song ). This soundtrack, creation authenticates more than simple accompaniment, will leave in disc under the name to double direction Music from the Body .

After the success of Dark Side off the Moon in 1973, the divergences of design between Toilets and the remainder of the group burst. It is him which from now on written all the words of the compositions of the group, and little by little it comes from there to ensure only the musics of them also: in Animals (1977), only the piece Dogs Co-is signed with David Gilmour.

In 1979, Waters signs only the near total of the titles of the album The Wall (David Gilmour Co-writing Young Lust , Comfortably Numb and Run Like Hell ), of which it supervises the film adaptation later three years. The song Another Brick in the Wall intends to stigmatize a “standardization” increasingly constraining with the world, to which the mental disease provides a possible refuge.

The small pocket of Final The Cut , left in 1983, develops the things: one reads there that it is about a “album of Roger Waters interpreted by Pink Floyd”, group which is nothing any more but the shade of itself: Rick Wright was excluded by Waters at the sessions of recording of The Wall , Nick Mason is straightforwardly replaced by another beater on certain pieces, and David Gilmour more and more frequently quarrels with Waters. Estimating that the group does not have any more reasons to be, it leaves it and starts to work on an album solo, The Pros and Cons off Hitch Hiking , which leaves in 1984. Follow several years of legal quarrels with the other members of Pink Floyd, whose Waters refuses that they record other albums under this name. It must finally give up its continuations.

In solo

The July 21st 1990, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, it gives in concert The Wall in front of 300.000 people, with many prestigious guests, inter alia The Scorpions, Sinéad O' Connor, Van Morrison, Cyndi Lauper. It is about the second larger concert ever given in Europe (that of Jean Michel Jarre with Defense, the July 14th of the same year, added up 1 million people).

In 1992 leaves its third album solo, that which the critic regards as more succeeded: Amused to Death . Toilets described there the pernicious influence of television on the populations.

At the time of the Live 8, the July 2nd 2005 with London with the Hyde Park, Roger Waters reinstates the group Pink Floyd for one evening. The group was thus complete, with David Gilmour, Roger Waters, Nick Mason and Richard Wright. Before starting Wish you were young stag , Roger paid homage to Syd Barrett: “ It is enough moving, to be there with these three guy after all these years… To be there to be counted with you all… In short, we do this for all those which are not here, and particularly, of course, for Syd. ” (free translation of “ It' S actually quite emotional, standing up young stag with thesis three guys after all thesis years. Standing to Be counted with the rest off you. Anyway, we' Re doing this for everyone who' S not young stag, particularly, off race for Syd ”).

Roger Waters started the June 2nd 2006 a European round of twenty-two dates which in particular led it to reinterpret the entirety of the album The Dark Side Of The Moon in company of Nick Mason on July 14th, 2006 at the time of the Grand Prix of France of Formule 1 on the Circuit of Nevers Magny-Course. He returns in spring 2007 for the continuation of his round, with in particular a date on May 3rd, 2007 with Paris-Bercy, and an appearance very acclaimed with the concert Live Earth of the New Jersey the 7/7/2007.
