Roberto Guerrero (born the November 16th 1959 with Medellin, Colombia), is an automobile old driver Colombia N. Author of a discrete passage in Formula 1 at the time of the seasons 1982 and 1983, it especially went famous for his services to the 500 Miles of Indianapolis.

Biography

Double champion of Colombia of karting, Roberto Guerrero joined England in 1977 to carry out his beginnings in automobile sport there, via the famous school of Jim Russell. After promising services in 1978 in the British championship of Ford Formula, he has more problems in 1979 in the European and British championships of Formule 3. But its second season Formulates 3 of them is of great quality, since it finishes vice-champion of Great Britain behind the Swede Stefan Johansson.

After a correct passage by the championship of Europe of Formula 2 in 1981, it reaches in 1982 Formula 1, within the stable Ensign of Mo Nunn, interested by undeniable qualities of pilot of the Colombian, but especially by its powerful budgetary supports (of which a coffee mark). That does not prevent the small British stable from cruelly missing budget to make good figure in F1, and Guerrero must be satisfied with anonymous services (when he manages to qualify himself) in the heart of the peleton. In 1983, the stable Theodore Racing repurchases the Ensign frames, and Guerrero is part. But like the former season, he does not manage to register the least point.

Without outlets in F1 after two seasons during which it did not know to be assembled able to rise above its statute of paying pilot, Guerrero decides to join the rows of the championship CART in the United States. In a less competing environment, the Colombian is not long in affirming himself like one of the sure values of the discipline and takes down the honorary trophy of best beginning from the year in 1984. He is also elected better beginning from the 500 Miles of Indianapolis (2nd for its first appearance on the Brickyard). Often in the first places of the group (in 1985 and 1986, it finishes respectively 3rd and 4th of Indy 500), it however pains to take down its first victory. This first so much awaited success, it obtains it at the beginning of 1987 on the layout of Phoenix. It is quite close to repeating at the time of the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, the following test, but a technical trouble at the time of its ultimate supply whereas it dominated the race obliges it to be satisfied with beautiful but frustrating second place. The remainder of its season is quite as brilliant: it gains a second victory (on the circuit of Mid-Ohio) and finishes the championship with the fourth rank. Its career is however quite close to stopping at the end of the year following a serious accident during tests deprived in Indianapolis which leaves it nearly two weeks in the coma.

Guerrero carries out its return to the competition since 1988, but without finding the flame of its first years. Also victim of bad choice of stable, it sinks in the anonymity of the group, at the point to find itself without full-time wheel for the season 1992. Having managed to find a wheel for the 500 Miles of Indianapolis, it creates sensation by taking down the pole position and by beating the record of the circuit. But the fairy tale turns short for Guerrero which, trapped by a track particularly fraiche and tires insufficiently assembled in temperature, share with the fault as of the turn of heating. It will be the last blow of glare of Guerrero, which will take part in a way discrère and episodical in the CART then with the new championship IRL until 2001 before taking its retirement.
