Robert Sibbald

Sir Robert Sibbald is a Médecin, a Naturaliste and a Scottish geographer , born the April 15th 1641 with Edinburgh.

It makes its studies in Edinburgh, Leyde and Paris. It is with Angers that it receives its title of doctor of medicine in 1662 and starts to exert in Edinburgh. In 1667, with Sir Andrew Balfour (1630-1694), it founds a Botanical garden of Edinburgh and takes part in the creation of the Royal College off Physicians of Edinburgh which it directs in 1684. The following year, he becomes professor of medicine at the university. In 1682, it is annobli and becomes the geographer of the king Charles II like his ordinary doctor.

Sibbald chairs a commission in 1682 charged to produce, not only one study of Natural history of Scotland but also the geographical and historical description of the country. Its objectives are detailed since 1683 in the Account off the Scotish Atlas, gold the Description off Scotland . It was to be published two parts (three by counting the atlas): Scotia Antiqua which presents the historical evolution of the Scottish nation; Scotia Moderna which describes the resources of the country as well as the modern history, the whole based on an analysis county by county. Its project does not succeed, only the part devoted to the natural history, Scotia It , is published in 1684.
