The river the Assumption is the most important river of the area of Lanaudière and comprises a Bassin pouring of 4220 square kilometers. Seven Rivière S principal throw in the river the Assumption (of the Ball, Versailles, Noire, the Launch, Ouareau, Holy Spirit and Achigan) before it flows in the Fleuve the St. Lawrence.

The source of the river is in the solid mass of the Mont Trembling and throws in the river at the level of the town of Repentigny (Quebec).

Nearly 150.000 people live in the area drained by the river.

Localization

Located on northern bank of the St-Laurent river, close to the north-eastern point of the Island of Montreal, the river the Assumption takes its source in the solid mass of the Mont Trembling and it is thrown in the river at the level of the town of Repentigny after one traverses of more than 200 km. Its catchment area includes/understands the secondary affluents of 9 basins and it covers an total surface area of 4220 km ². The geographical coordinates go from 73°17' to 74°25' of western longitude and 45°43' to 46°35' of northern latitude.

Geography

The basin of the river the Assumption overlaps two natural areas, that is to say the Low-grounds of the St-Laurent and the Plateau laurentien. The area of the low-grounds occupies approximately one the third of the surface of the basin between the Fleuve the St. Lawrence and the buttress of the Laurentides. Its relief is a uniform plain with some hills (from 0 to 100 m) dominated by the farms. The texture of the ground is rather fine and rests on an impermeable argillaceous base.

The plate laurentien, which belongs to the Canadian Bouclier, is a mountainous ground. It is separated from the low-grounds by a well defined escarpment located approximately at the level line of the 150 meters (a limit of is in west to the height of Saint-Calixte - Rawdon - Saint-Jean-with-Matha). This escarpment is characterized by the presence of several falls. The plate includes/understands several small valleys and mountains of average altitude of 230 meters in the southern part and of 460 meters in the northern part. One finds also several mountains of more than 600 meters in the solid mass of the Trembling Mount where the river the Assumption takes its source.

Hydrographic network

North towards the south, the average slope of the rivers decrease. The slopes, more important on the plate creates a fast flow of water. In the low-grounds, the rather flat relief produces a slower flow. Moreover, the river the Assumption has several meanders, of which most famous is that which forms almost the island where is located the town of the Assumption. In addition to the rivers, the basin of the river the Assumption counts 490 lakes of which 24 have a surface of more than one square kilometer. The majority of the lakes are located in the plate laurentien.

Canoeing

The river the Assumption is a destination interesting for the practice of the boat-camp-site and sporting canoeing. The part of the river upstream of Saint-Like lends itself well to the boat-camp-site since the river runs in a mainly wild medium. Of Saint-Like with the bridge of the Shareholders, the " is; section of the Seven Seuils" , also called " section of the Seven Chutes" , where the river comprises seven obstacles which are in fact of the rapids rather than falls for the majority. This section is especially mess in a sporting way (boat with added floating or kayak), but one can also descend it in boat-camp-site with the help of a series from bearings and cordelles. Then the " comes; section of Rentiers" , energy of the bridge of the Shareholders to the bridge of the row Holy-Cecile. This section comprises rapids less difficult than those of the section of the Seven Thresholds, but one can only there pagayer at the day, since it is difficult to find sites of camp-site there since the grounds around are private.

Water quality

Urban and industrial pollution

The water quality of the basin of the river the Assumption was seriously compromised by the socio-economic economic situation which prevails here. Since 1950, the situation is complicated by a relatively important urbanization of banks of the rivers, by a diversified agriculture and an industrialization important in the southern part of the basin. Although the nature of pollution changed since 1950, in particular by strict environmental laws and the arrival of equipment for the purification of water, the water pollution in the basin therefore is not stopped.

More than 150.000 people remain permanently on the territory of the area catchment of the river the Assumption. The most important cities of the 43 municipalities located in the catchment area are those of Repentigny, of Joliette, the Keeper and the Assumption. Moreover, the northern area of the basin being an area of holiday, this one accommodates a seasonal population of approximately 45.000 people.

The majority of the municipalities of the basin feed out of drinking water starting from surface water and meet the needs of more than 100.000 people. The food of the other residences and country cottages, distributed on approximately 90% of the territory, are supplied starting from subterranean water.

Agricultural pollution

Urban and industrial pollution has various impacts on water quality in the area catchment of the river the Assumption, but, alone, they cannot explain the degree of pollution of the river the Assumption. Agricultural pollution contributes in a very broad measurement to the contamination of the medium.

In the basin of the river the Assumption, the agricultural activities occupy a dominating place. In 1995, one counted 1305 producers there having 60.221 hectares of ground in culture and 73.563 animal units.

Agricultural pollution can take several forms of which specific pollution (discharge of manure directly in the rivers) and diffuse pollution (infiltration of fertilizing products in the subterranean water tablecloths). Diffuse pollution is more complex to control because it is related to a multitude of sources distributed on the whole of the territory. The manures of farm applied in too great quantity to the fields and whose fertilizing matter ends up joining a river by streaming illustrate this type of pollution. It is absolutely necessary to solve the problem of diffuse pollution, if ever the water of the basin will not be able to find desired quality.
