River

A river is a River which is thrown in the Mer or the Océan - or, exceptionally, in a desert, as for the Okavango. It is distinguished from a Rivière, which is thrown in another River. The rivers having their source close to the maritime coast are called coastal rivers.

The three longer rivers in the world are the the Amazon with 7  000  km, followed by the the Nile with 6  700  km and finally the the Mississippi - Missouri with 6  210  km.

The the Amazon is also the river which has, and by far, largest Bassin pouring (6  150  000  km ²) and the greatest flow (190 000 m ³ /s).

In Europe, the largest rivers are the the Volga with 3  700  km and the the Danube with 2  857  km (see Delta of the Danube).

Bed

The space which a river occupies varies according to its hydrology:
  • major Bed, as called “flat of flood” or “reads flood” is wider as the ordinary bed. It is covered by Alluvion S;
  • minor Bed also called ordinary Bed or “reads apparent”;
  • the Chenal of low water level does not occupy that part of the ordinary bed.

Ten longer rivers

It is difficult to measure length of river, mainly because the rivers have a property Fractal E, which means that the more precise measurement is, the more the river will seem long. Also it is difficult to determine exactly where a river starts since generally the river upstream are formed by seasonal brooks, transitory marshes, or lakes. Global warming involves a reduction in the rivers on all the surface of the sphere.

It is about an average length:

  1. the Amazon (+ of 7.000 km)

  2. the Nile (6 452 km)
  3. Yangtsé (Chang Jiang) (6 380 km)
  4. the Mississippi - Missouri (6 270 km)
  5. Ienisseï - Angara (5 550 km)
  6. Huang He (5 464 km)
  7. Ob - Irtych (5 410 km)
  8. Love (4 410 km)
  9. Congo (4 380 km or 4.670 km). (the localization of the source of this river is discussed)
  10. Lena (4 260 km)
