Ridge sheathing

The ridge sheathing is the line of high meeting of two slopes of a Toiture.

It is by nature one of the delicate points to treat when one carries out the sealing cover of a building. According to the type of material used, the realization of the ridge sheathing calls upon various techniques:

  • roof in Tile S traditional: one uses tiles identical, laid out with horse to the top of the two slopes. These tiles are known as ridge although they are tiles strictly identical to the other tiles used. However, one uses sometimes in ridge sheathing of the of the same tiles forms but greater dimensions. The tiles of ridge sheathing are traditionally built with the mortar. The current trend is to lay out in overlapping of the vacuum of junction of the slopes an additional waterproofing system: specific PVC element, lead strip, etc which guarantees the sealing best and even, sometimes, comprises openings of ventilation which contribute to the ventilation of the roofs. The ridge tiles dissimulate this device to preserve the esthetics of the cover.
  • roof in industrial tiles: specific ridge tiles make it possible to ensure the junction of the two sides of roof.
  • roof in Slate S or plates of Zinc: one generally uses in this case of the bands of zinc folded into two in the direction length, posed with horse on the two sides of roof to cover. One can also make cross slates and carve the pieces of slates which exceed (Lignolet S).
  • roofs in straw, sheets…: an additional thickness is added to the level of the ridge sheathing, and the natural flexibility of material often makes it possible to ensure the sealing. However, in certain cases, to avoid having to treat a line of ridge sheathing, the techniques of construction call upon a round cover to have only one critical point, which is used then often as Cheminée.
  • in Normandy, the ridge sheathing of the thatched roofs consists of a bench of argillaceous ground - relatively impermeable - coating the end with the stems of reed, in which irises are planted. The roots of the plant help to fix the material

In traditional constructions into hard, one prefers to carry out linear ridge sheathings, by minimizing the number of points of inflection of the ridge line. This allows placement a simpler of materials and to guarantee a good sealing. The curved ridge sheathings can however exist, at the price of the use of composite material or metal bands with a suitable working.
