Riddarhuset
Riddarhuset , in French the house of the nobility , is the assembly of the Swedish nobility. Between the {{XVIIe}} and the 19th century, it was a room of the General states of the kingdom (the Ståndsriksdagen), equivalent of the British House of Lords.
After the replacement in 1866 of the General states of the kingdom by the Riksdag, the house of the nobility became a semi-official body of representation of the Swedish nobility, controlled by the government. Since 2003 it is a private institution which works in favor of the interests of the nobility.
The building
The house of the nobility is also the name of the building maintained by the assembly, and located in the old city of Stockholm (Gamla Stan). It was built of 1641 with 1672 by four Architecte S different: Simon of the Valley of 1641 with 1642, Heinrich Wilhelm of 1645 with 1652, Joost Vingboons of 1653 with 1656 and Jean of the Valley of 1656 with 1672. The two wings of the building were added in 1870.On its southern face a statue of Gustav Vasa is, whereas to north a park extends in which one notices a statue of Axel Oxenstierna.
