Riazan

Riazan ( Russian Ряза́нь in ) is a town of Russia, center administrative of the Oblast de Riazan. The city is at the edge of the river Oka, to 196 km in the south-east of Moscow. Its population is of: 515900 in 2005.

History

Riazan would have been created in 1095 by Russian colonists, like posts advanced of a territory populated until there by Finnois. The city was initially in bois  ; it was gradually rebuilt out of stone. The oldest part of the city goes back today to the 15th century.

However the city is not quoted for the first time in 1301 under name Pereslavl'-Ryazansky . At the time it belonged to the principality of Riazan which was independent until the middle of the 12th century. The first leader of Riazan was undoubtedly Iaroslav Sviatoslavich, prince of Tchernigov (city of the Rus' of Kiev), later prince Murom-Riazan.

The area located at the limit of the steppe and the forest suffered from many invasions come from the south: Khazars, Pechenegs, Polovotsiens. The capital of the Riazan principality was the first Russian city to fall under the yoke from the Mongolian : the city was conquered and destroyed in 1237. It was rebuilt 50 km further under the name of Pereslavl-Ryazansky: the old site is indicated today under name Staraya Riazan ( old Riazan ).

At the end of the 13th century, prince de Riazan moved the capital of the principality with Pereslavl-Ryazansky which was renamed Riazan in 1778. In 1521 the principality was attached to the Russian Empire.

Today Riazan is a city turned towards industry and the army. The principal branches of industry are heavy industry and the metallurgy. There exist many training centres of which that of the airborne troops.
