Retrofutur

Rétrofutur is a Roleplay French published by Multisim in 2002. Between the Science fiction, whodunnit 50' S and the paranormal, it proposes to play of resistant in a strange and dangerous world.

Universe

The world of Rétrofutur is based over the revisited Fifties, the “twisted 50 ' S” where there do not exist any more States, but only specialized bureaucratic agencies controlling the life of managed in these least aspects.

These transformations are due to the contact one century before of humanity with the Foreigners, who offered a new technology to him to be able to accommodate them.

But beside this oiled system, of the powerful countervailing powers developed: mafiasos, terrorists, marginal and resistant. Resistant what incarnates PJs, and who fight following Jean Moulin or of Einstein, lies distilled by the agencies. These Pjs evolve/move in this urban universe violate, oppressive, alienating which seems also marked by the appearance of paranormaux phenomena.

The system

With creation, the player chooses the faction (Agencies, Mafias, Terroristes, Egarés) and the organization (Agency of Peace, Cosa Nostra, Brigade Atlantis, Rêveurs,…) from which it is resulting, and the reason which made it join Resistance. Parallel to this choice, the player has also the possibility of making of his character a non-A, a medium in catch with the paranormal.

The originality comes owing to the fact that the capacities of the character are represented by verbs and not figures with which fields are associated. Thus to make a success of an action, the player builds a sentence while trying to use his competences and of the fields. One then compares the number of relevant words used with a level of difficulty, to have the score to reach with D10.

Finally Ubik, key component of the system: it is a common container where the players can slip of the “substances died” into the situations where they are weakened. The MJ with the possibility of picking of the substance dead and then offers to a PJ a hallucination which it causes front, afterwards, or while it withdraws the substance dead. Ubik, thus measures the degradation of the universe, and induced that Pjs are lost in reality.
