Responder

A responder (telephone) is an electronics component whose principal goal is to answer in an automatic way a telephone call to the place of a user, either because it is absent, or because it does not wish to answer.

With the difference of the mail systems vocal, which are generally integrated in the equipment of the phone network, the responder is physically installed in the buildings of the user, usually connected or integrated into a telephone final .

Functions

Basic function

The principal function of a responder is obviously to answer the phone calls. The first responders did nothing but answer and diffuse with the correspondents a preregistered message (advertisement). One then speaks about simple responder . Enough quickly arrived the need to take the messages of the correspondents after the diffusion of the advertisement. One speaks in this case about automatic message recorder .

The traditional sequence of answer to a call is the following one:

  • the incoming call is announced by the ringing telephone;
  • at the limit of a deadline for reply, the responder takes the line;
  • the responder diffuses with the correspondent the voice announcement recorded as a preliminary;
  • at the end of the advertisement, the responder passes in recording mode;
  • the correspondent records his text message and puts an end to its call while hanging up again.

When the user of the responder wishes it, it can listen to the received messages, generally while pressing on a dedicated key.

Advanced functions

Into the wire of time, a certain number of complementary functions were integrated, in order to make the use of the responders more pleasant.

  • distant Interrogation: allows the owner of the responder to take of it control out of at his place, in order to be able to consult the received messages or to configure the system. Control is generally done after having seized a secret code, and using the keyboard of the distant telephone in the form of orders DTMF.

  • Filtering: allows a user to listen to locally the message in the course of deposit, to identify calling it and possibly to answer the call in progress.
  • Time-stamping: allows to know the date and the hour to which the message was deposited.
  • various Configurations of system (deadline for reply, etc)

Technology

The first answering machines stored the emitted advertisements and the messages received on magnetic bands. Quickly these bands were miniaturized in the form of audio cassettes then of Microcassette.

These supports had the advantage of a relative audio good quality and low costs. However, they were affected by problems of bad reliability and a long access time (related to the time of rewinding).

With the Numerical advent of technologies S, the idea to record advertisements and messages in electronic memories appeared quickly. First of all, the advertisements (of duration relatively short) were stored in this form, maintaining the messages received are it also.

The architecture of the product is generally based on a processor of signal processing (DSP), which carries out the compression of the word in order to limit the storage capacities necessary, with depend sometimes on audio quality.

Evolutions

The autonomous responders tend to see their quantity decreasing by the fact:

  • of the capacity to integrate it in the basic telephone, especially for the numerical cordless phones (for example DECT) which have capacities for treatment of numeric signal already.
  • of the integration of equivalent functions in the mail systems vocal integrated in the phone networks of the telecommunications operators or in PABX
