Repentance
The repentance is the public demonstration or towards God of the rather private feeling which is the Repentir . These word are sometimes employed in a synonymous way, the word repentance making it possible to make the difference with the verb repentance . The repentance is sometimes confused with a form of Masochisme justified by last faults. If not, she is sometimes seen with a painful negative connotation, but can be simply the recognition of a constructive sadness.
The word in English language ( repentance ) does not make the difference between repentance and repentance.
The English term (developed in anglophone Wikipedia) has also the direction to seek the forgiveness somebody . That can be then a False-friend.
The repentance and the religion
The repentance is recognized by the Judaïsme, the Christianisme and the Islam. The repentance is seen in a negative way in particular because it can be preceded by a Punition. Indeed, in certain companies of passed and today, one starts by punishing the indicated faulty one, then it is not rehabilitated that if it are repent.
The repentance took a new direction to speak for example about Jean-Paul II giving a report on a regret relative to acts made by the Église in the past admitted publicly like faults (see the article Péché) with the passing of the History.
The Église speaks about the repentance although from a theological point of view only the repentance can be Strictly speaking necessary; the repentance, by its public side, can however be seen like a request for reconciliation with the men in addition to God.
In certain cases, the repentance can be imposed like Pénitence. That can very well then not be true a repentance, i.e. accompanied by a sincere Repentir. That can be all the more comprehensible if there is no what repentance.
Repentance in Christianity
Models and criteria of comprehension
In the Catholic church, the international theological Commission distinguishes three models from gestures of repentance:
- the liturgical Prayer of the Confiteor,
- the Psalm S pénitentiels, especially those where Israel, with the depth of its suffering, of its misery, confesses the sins of its history, confesses the sins of his/her Fathers, its permanent rebellion since the beginnings of the history until the current moment;
- prophetic warnings of the Apocalypse addressed to the seven Church S.
She also sees criteria of comprehension of the repentance:
- recognition of the sins,
- the Truth: to confess, that means, according to Saint Augustin, " to make the truth " , and thus implies especially the discipline and the humility of the truth.
- purification: always according to Holy Augustin, a " confessio peccati " Christian woman will be always accompanied by a " confessio laudis ".
Concerning the Church compared to the history:
- the first criterion implies that the Church of the present cannot be constituted in court which condemns the last generations;
- the second criterion implies to deny in no manner the evil made in the Church, but also not to be allotted by a feigned humility of the sins which were not made, or those for which there does not exist yet of historical certainty.
- the third criterion means that God purifies and renews always the Church, in spite of our sins, and thus makes large things while making use of clay vases
Repentance of the Church

The repentance makes following a renewal of the catholic Théologie intervened at the time of the Concile Vatican II, in particular on the questions of oecumenism and Dialog inter-monk. The Dialog inter-monk in particular was the subject of a declaration of Paul VI at the time of the council in 1965, Nostra Ætate, which fixes the principles as regards relations between the Christianisme and the others Religion S.
The principal points having been the subject of repentances at the request of Jean-Paul II are:
- the business Galileo (1979-1981)
- the attitude of the Christians compared to the Judaism, in particular during the Second world war, but more especially the culture Antijudaïque developed by the Church in its history,
- the attitude of the Christians compared to the other religions.

Some, around the theologist Hans Küng, consider the repentance An 2000 as a media gesture which was not followed major acts tending to concretize it, except for the abandonment of the theology of the Vetus Israel / Verus Israel already initiated by the theologist Marcel Simon, and made available of the general public by the conciliar declaration Nostra Ætate (October 28th 1965).
Repentance in the Judaism

“Asseret Yemei Teshouva” (Hebrew: עשרתימיתשובה ten days of repentance) indicate in the Judaïsme the period between Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippour. These ten days of penitence perpetuate and accentuate the spirit of repentance month of Eloul.
Laic Repentance
The term of repentance also made its appearance in the laic vocabulary, with sensitive a connotation negative and thus pejorative.

But during the mandate of Jacques Chirac, certain French understood that France could not advance without recognizing its errors of last in its colonies, from where the law Taubira of May 2001. Certain historians and politicians dispute this law of " repentance". The polemic had started with the recognition of the Armenian genocide in January 2001 and had finished in October 2006 .
The new president of the Republic Nicolas Sarkozy often used this term, during the countryside of 2007. On Sunday, May 6, 2007, evening of the 2nd turn of the presidential election, he pronounces this sentence: " I want to finish some with the repentance which is a form of hatred of oneself, and competes with it memories which nourishes the hatred of the autres."
