Quotation

We read time with other that this war must end in what is called a stamping from the colonial people. In large colonial France, there are neither people to free nor racial discriminations to be abolished. There are populations which feel French and which want to take and to which it France wants to give an increasingly big part in the life and the democratic institutions of the French community. There are populations which we intend to lead, stage by stage, with the personality, for ripest with the political franknesses but which intend to know of another independence only the independence of France .”

Rene Pleven, then Police chief with the Colonies, speech of January 30th, 1944 to the African Conference of Brazzaville.
