Renault Mégane

The Mégane is a car of the manufacturer French Renault appeared in 1995.

This compact truck is confronted with a bet, to replace the Renault 19, whose European sales are excellent, in particular in Germany where its plebiscite equalizes that of the Volkswagen Golf, like the latter, moreover, in France (what will be the subject of publicity campaigns cocasses on behalf of these two manufacturers).

Thus born in 1995, Mégane, will be presented to the general public via an estival publicity campaign, centered around the merits of its effective brake. Alas this one will very quickly be the subject of a recall campaign in workshops, accompanied by qualitative handing-over on level, which will tarnish the image of reliability of the vehicle.

Image which will be truly corrected only with the arrival in 1997 of the model Scenic, the first monospace compacts European relevant. Moreover there is the philosophy of the Mégane range: to diversify the offer. Thus over 7 years, 7 models will leave to the distinct body: truck, truck 4 doors with trunk, station-wagon, convertible, monospace, 4X4, and cut. This last is an innovation because it is judicious to upwards replace a version 3 doors by drawing the prices. Thus the commercial release (adapted Taxation and removed back places) of Mégane will not be declined, a first, in 3 doors, but in the truck, station-wagon or monospace.

Question backdoors, Mégane, like many Renault, chose elliptic forms in their cutting, not circumventing the passage of wheel, true stylistic signature of the mark.

However packed, the Mégane family will live in the shade of Scenic (60% of the sales of the range in 2000). Considered to be obsolete, pataude, turned for the third age for some, it is its comfort and its discretion which will allure the purchasers. However is quickly to forget an interior conceived in half-tone; astute certainly for Scenic, but instrument the panel, nearly identical for all the range, will be bâclée on the ergonomic level (orders badly placed…). Even the restylage of 1999 will make the dead end on interior furniture, attempting to give new fires and a new grill.

On this second grinding is to be noted the arrival of one of the first diesel with common slope at Renault, the 1,9 dci. However this last is an adaptation of injection high pressure on an old motorization, the 1,9 dti. The result is hardly convincing, and will be approved only by the amateurs of the mark. Noise, the placidity and especially unreliability (1,9 dti being victim many breakdowns, of which most serious, which was the object of a vast recall in workshop; the fragile belt of distribution). In end of a career, the arrival of more homogeneous diesel competitors will seal the fate of Mégane, on a market turning more and more to this carburation.

However in seven years of European existence, Mégane will be produced, all confused body, to 5 million units, and continuous with being abroad manufactured for certain markets (Argentina at the head).
