Renan is a common Suisse of the Canton of Bern, located in the District of Courtelary. It belongs to the area of the the Bernese Jura, the French-speaking part of the Canton of Bern.
Geography
Renan is to 8 km as the crow flies La Chaux-de-Fonds, in the upper part of the Small valley of Saint-Imier, along the course of the Suze. The culminating point of the communal territory is to 1265 m on the Mount-D' Amin and to 1080 m on the Mountain of the Right.The communal territory is occupied at a rate of 5% per the habitat, 34% per the forest, 60% per the agricultural zones and 1% of unproductive ground.
The small valley of the Convers , made disseminated farms, is located on the territory of the commune
History
The origin of the village goes back to XIIIe century, at the time where Burgondes cleared the grounds in order to settle. In 1375, Renan is plundered and burned by Enguerrand de Coucy, which was windy of Alsace, with its bands of mercenaries, to claim the heritage of his/her mother to the duke of Austria. In 1630, Jean-Henri d' Ostein, Prince-bishop of Basle, allow the inhabitants to build a temple. In 1639, Renan is again destroyed by a fire caused by the mercenaries of the duke of Saxony-Weimar. From 1832 to 1834, the village gives asylum to many refugees neuchâtelois who publish the newspaper " there; Proscrit".Today, Renan counts some small industries (electronics, construction, polishing, mechanics) and several craftsmen. The village is primarily agricultural. One counts about thirty exploitations, in particular in the valley of Convers. One also finds there a Center professional for handicapped people founded in 1961.

Transport
Renan is located on the line CF Bienne - La Chaux-de-Fonds, inaugurated in 1859, electrified in 1934.
