Remake

The remake (Anglicisme coming from the verb “to remake” which means “to remake”) is, in the cinematographic Jargon, a Film adapted starting from a previously existing film. The new contents can be more or less faithful to the original, according to the choices of new the Réalisateur S and producing S.

The remakes amount per hundreds, even per thousands, in the history of the cinema. They generally correspond to a minimization of the taking risk on behalf of the production, being generally based on the fame of a famous film, sometimes also on the desire “to vacuum-clean” a less known film. The American cinema , more than very other, had abundantly recourse during the last decades there while drawing from successes of foreign cinematographies, to which its public is rather hermetic.

One finds among the American remakes a great number of French comedies and several films of Japanese and Asian horror.

From a point of view cinephilic, the remakes have an interest because, presenting a vision different from the same initial work, the differences are revealing characteristics of their time of realization. It can be also the occasion to make ideological or political choices in the new version, for example while replacing or by removing certain counterparts.

In the American cinema one can distinguish two types of remake :

  • the remakes of “old hand” films (mainly American or anglophone, more rarely foreign), than one gives to the last style. Generally, it is necessary to count one period of at least twenty years so that a film knows a new version.

  • the remakes of foreign films contemporary, generally produced few times after the original, and initially intended to adapt a work noticed to the public American, mainly refractory with the reading of the subtitles (generally the only way of seeing a film made in Foreign language in the United States, the Doubling of foreign films being very rare).

In certain cases, one or more Acteur S includes their role in the new version. It is thus the case of:

The title of a remake is not necessarily the same one as that of the original.
