Reichsburg Cochem
The Castle of the town of Cochem, called Reichsburg Cochem , is built on a hill which dominates of a hundred meters the valley of the the Moselle.
History
Reichsburg was probably built about the year 1000. Successively seat of the Count Palatines, remains imperial dynasty of the Hohenstaufen, it becomes the property of the Prince-Voters and the archbishops of Trier.
In 1689, at the time of the War of the league of Augsburg, under the reign of Louis XIV, the castle was destroyed by the French troops, like several other fortifications of the valleys of the the Rhine and the Moselle.
Cochem and its castle were occupied and controlled by French, at the time of the Napoléoniennes wars.
At the 19th century, Louis Ravené, a Prussian industrialist , repurchases the field. Between 1868 and 1877, it undertakes the rebuilding of the castle in style Néo-gothique, according to old plans, and arranges it comfortably.
In 1942, the castle passes in the public domain. It belongs to the town of Cochem since 1978.
Visit
The castle comprises 50 parts, with which 7 are furnished and are the subject of a guided visit:
- Dining room rebirth, remarkable for its woodworks
- Part for the ladies: pieces of furniture 18th century decorated with Marquetry, covered chimney of earthenware squares of Delft.
- Romance Part , according to the shape of the vaults of the ceiling. A Secrete way, length of 1 km, connects it to the monastery Capucins located of center town.
- Passage to the top of the gate, comprising a splendid painted ceiling.
- Room of hunting
- Room of the knights, of Gothic Style, most important of the castle.
- Room of weapons.
In the court is a well, deep of 50 meters. One can also observe the Beffroi, decorated of four turrets, and the tower of the witches, only intact vestige of the old castle.
