Rehoboth

Rehoboth is a Ville center of the Namibia, populated of 21.378 inhabitants (2005).

Geographical location and ethnic composition

It is located on high plateaus at 90 kilometers at the south of Windhoek, the Capitale of Namibia.

Rehoboth is divided into seven districts.

The great majority of the population consists of basters.

History

At the origin, the city was located in territory Nama.

In 1845, a Rhenish missionary, Heinrich Kleinschmidt, baptized the place of the name of Rehoboth and built a Mission there.

In 1864, the namas gave up the area.

In 1870, the immigrant basters of the Colonie of the Cape obtained conference of peace of Okahandja the September 23rd 1870 between Oorlam S, namas and Hereros, the authorization to be established in Rehoboth.

In little time, they were to form the community of the Basters de Rehoboth.

From 333 people in 1870, the population passed to 800 residents in 1874 and 1500 in 1885.

During the Apartheid at the 20th century, Rehoboth constituted a Enclave for the basters known under the name of " Rehoboth Gebiet" , transformed into Bantustan in 1979 under the name of Rehoboth.
