Historic insight

In 1795, the Netherlands, the Belgium and the Duché of Luxembourg were integrated into the France and were divided into nine departments. Luxembourg constituted the Département of the Forests.

After a admistrative revision in 1796 this department consisted of 26 cantons.

One of these cantons was the canton of Ospern (it took its official name only in 1803). Its limits corresponded roughly to the current limits of the canton of Rédange.

At the same time Ospern was made Décanat, which the locality remained until our days.

Starting from 1841 Rédange Ospern as chief town of canton replaced.
