Recife

Recife is the capital of the federal state of the Pernambouc to the Brésil. It is the ninth city of Brazil and was founded in 1537.

Geography

The old center of Recife is located on two islands connected between them and to the coast by two series of two bridges. The city then grew towards the interior of the grounds and the south, between the beach and the international airport.

To north, the suburbs extend until Olinda. The cities of the agglomerations are made up of Jaboatão back Guararapes, Olinda, Paulista, Abreu E Lima, Igarassu, Camaragibe, Cabo de Santo Agostinho E São Lourenço da Mata, Araçoiaba, Ilha de Itamaracá, Ipojuca, Moreno and Itapissuma. The east, towards the interior of the grounds, the poor popular quarters then (Favela S) follow one another to the terminal of interurban buses.

The city covers approximately 30 kilometers of is in west and more than 40 of north in the south. It includes/understands more than 1,4 million inhabitants in 2004 and 3,5 million inhabitants for the agglomeration.

Tourism

True tourist destination, it is regarded as the Venice of Brazil.

Culture

The Carnaval of Recife (and that of Olinda) are famous for their popular and convivial environment, without excesses of violence or formalism which can characterize other carnivals (like that of El Salvador or Rio de Janeiro for example).

However of great sways in the crowd occur, in particular at the time of the Gallo da Madrugada , ravelled wired for sound trucks on which play of the prestigious groups and which are followed by approximately a million people each Saturday which opens the week of the Carnival (Saturday until Fatty Tuesday).

Two lines of Métro serve the city, since the center towards the terminal of bus in the east on the one hand and towards the airport and a great shopping mall in the south on the other hand. A network of drunk covers the whole of the agglomeration. The city is also equipped with an important industrial port.

Recife is the 99 ème the largest city (in urban surface) in the world with 3.599.181 inhabitants. It is one of largest the cities of Brazil.
