Rebated joint

Anglet is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

One pronounces the T final of Rebated joint whose name in Basque is Angelu , in Occitan Gascon Anglet .
Its inhabitants is called Angloys.

Geography

The Basque Côte French indicates the part of the Aquitanian littoral (Côte of Money) lain between the cave of the Chambre of Love in Anglet and the Spanish border.

Hydrography

It is between Anglet (left bank) and Tarnos (Right Bank) that the Adour throws in the Atlantic Ocean (the Bay of Biscay).
The commune is also crossed by the brooks Maharin, and of the Esboucdes mill, affluents of Adour.
Lastly, the brook of Petabure, tributary of the brook of Harrieta which is born with Arcangues, sprinkles to him also the grounds of Rebated joint.

The Gascon name of the commune is Anglet and its Basque name Angelu .

The toponym Anglet appears in the forms Angles (1188, cartulaire of Bayonne) and Sanctus Leo d' Anglet (1761, collations of the diocese of Bayonne).

Its origin is Romance, of Latin angulus, ground in the shape of corner.

Languages

Of discussed linguistic origin, Rebated joint and the common neighbors of Biarritz and Bayonne can be regarded according to the points of view as Gascon born, (Occitan be) or Basque S.

Actually, the vast majority of this zone spoke Gascon traditionally, as attest it the Linguistic atlas of Gascogne (ALG) (1954-66) and the investigations into the limit of the Basque of Lucien Bonaparte (1863), even if certain districts or zones would tend to be qualifiable Basque (undoubtedly by a contribution of the surrounding Basque campaigns).

The name of Rebated joint, means in Gascon: small angle . The angle which the Adour had left while going up towards its old mouths of the Cape Breton and the Old man-Boucau, before its diversion in 1578. The name of Angelu (out of Basque) to the same significance.

The Gascon currency of Rebated joint is My E pignada per me ayda i.e.: Sea and pignada to help me (the pignada in Gascon is a forest of maritime pines, present on the armorial bearings of the city).

In Anglet, the majority of the names of the streets and places known as old which were safeguarded are Gascon (approximately 160 references).

The new districts, initially occupied by Gascon market-gardeners primarily, were gained on the marshes. Rebated joint yielded to the 19th century part of its territory with Bayonne (Saint-Leon district, around the hospital).

  • Jean Larribau (born in 1889 in Anglet - deceased in 1916 in Belgium) is a French player of Rugby to XV, having occupied the station of half of fray in national selection and to the Olympic Biarritz.
  • Clément Duhour (born in 1912 in Anglet - deceased in 1983 with Neuilly on the Seine) is a singer, actor, realizer and producer French. Athlete, it took part in the Olympic Games of Los Angeles in 1932.
  • Lucien Pariès (born in 1947 in Anglet - deceased in 1998 with Aix-the-Baths) is a French player of Rugby to XV, half of opening of Olympic Biarritz of 1964 to 1973, then RC Narbonne as from 1974 as well as team of France.
  • Jose Miguel Beñaran Ordeñana (born in 1949 with Arrigorriaga (Biscay, Spain), was a theorist Marxiste and directing revolutionary of the Basque independantism ( Euskadi your Askatasuna). It was killed on December 21st, 1978 with Anglet, by the explosion of a bomb placed in its car.
