Reason and feelings

Reason and feelings ( Judicious and Sensibility ), novel of Jane Austen (1811).

Summary

After the death of the father of Elinor, Marianne and Margaret Dashwood, those and their mother is wrongfully private of their heritage by their half-brother (born from a preceding marriage of Mr. Dashwood) and his wife. Their considerably decreased financial position, they are thus found in a particularly difficult position.

Forced to leave their field of Norland in the Sussex for Barton Cottage in the Devonshire, the young girls are quickly accepted by their new business, particularly by a generous relative and his mother-in-law Mrs Jennings. Marianne, whose romanticism and love of life charm the secrecy Colonel Brandon, is soon deeply in love with the young person and impetuous Willoughby. Elinor, of which the provisions are more careful and considered, which hides its feelings with attention, suffers from the absence of Edward Ferrars, the brother of his unpleasant sister-in-law, whom she knew in Norland and which lives in London.

In spite of their very different personalities, the two sisters experienced great sorrows in their sentimental businesses: Marianne suffers with ostentation while Elinor does not make it possible anybody to see his evils of heart. They are, however, their common qualities - understanding, constancy and integrity vis-a-vis the bad intentions of the others which enable them to enter a new life of peace and satisfaction.
