Rastatt

Rastatt is a German city, located in the Land of Bade-Wurtemberg.

The name of the city, which formerly could be spelled “Rastadt”, should not be confused with that of another German city, Ober-Ramstadt.

Geography

Rastatt is located in the oriental party of the plain of the Rhine, to approximately 10 km of Baden-Baden, 30  km of Karlsruhe and 65  km of Strasbourg.

History

Rastatt, quoted for the first time in 1084 pennies the form “ Rasteten ”, was set fire to by the French troops in 1689.

The March 6th 1714 was signed there the Traité of Rastatt, in appendix with the Traité of Utrecht, which put an end to the War of succession of Spain.

Until 1771, Rastatt was residence (nonexclusive) margraves of Bade of the branch known as of Baden-Baden.

Of November 1797 with April 1799 was held the Congrès to with it of Rastatt, which aimed to grant compensations to the German princes dispossessed of their States on left bank of the Rhine, annexed by France. This congress failed after the attack, fomented by the Austria, against several French negotiators.

In July 1849, the Prussian troops seized the fortress of Rastatt, after the attempt at liberal revolution (in which took part of many Badois) against the operation of the German Confédération.

There existed, of 1945 at the beginning of the Années 1990, a small French district with Rastatt, dependant on the presence of the French Forces in Germany (F).

Economy

The principal employer is the Car manufacturer DaimlerChrysler.
