Radiator
A radiator is a device which allows the heat transfer between two mediums. It has as a function, either to evacuate the heat of an object to avoid its overheating, or to heat a space or an object. The radiator generally operates by Convection, but also by Rayonnement. It is with mode of transfer of heat that it owes its name.
Fields of application
The fields of application of the radiators are very vast. The radiators are used as soon as it there with the need for exchanging a great quantity of heat in a restricted volume.
Domestic radiator
The purpose of the domestic radiators are to heat a room and to maintain it at a certain temperature comfort. There exist primarily two operations for the radiators domestiques.
Les electric radiators function by Joule effect: an electric current passes in resistances which warm up, thus heating the medium environnant.
Another technology consists in making circulate a hot fluid (water, oil…) inside the apparatus, the walls of this one going up in temperature and heating the surrounding medium.
Automobile radiator
Inside a driving automobile circulates a Liquide of cooling of which the goal is to cool the body of the engine. This liquid as for him is cooled by a radiator in contact with the surrounding air around the car.
Electronics component
Electronics and data processing produce heat which it is necessary to dissipate under penalty of damaging the material. These fields use small radiators called Refroidisseur which can be coupled to ventilators (see photo below). In this field one speaks about Aircooling.
Other fields of application:
-
Aeronautical: radiator on the wings of plane to prevent them from freezing;
- Industry: dissipation of heat generated by an industrial process;
- …

Modes of transfer
Heat, generally, is transmitted according to three ways:- Conduction;
- Convection;
- Radiation.
Optimization of the transfer
To transmit heat effectively, a radiator must be a good thermal conductive (from where the current use of metal) and have a large surface of contact between the two systems, which explains the forms often complex employees in order to maximize heat exchange.
To manage the radiators well
So that a radiator is effective on the energy level, it is necessary - but not sufficient - that the building well is isolated and equipped from a powerful heating installation. The inhabitants have also a big role to play, in particular in the manner of laying out their pieces of furniture and of using the Thermostat with of which very good radiator should be equipped.
