R. Paul Butler

Paul Butler is a American Astronome which seeks planets extrasolaires. It has Co-overdraft two thirds of the 150 planets extrasolaires to date discovered.

It obtained a BA and ms with the Université of State of San Francisco, carried out a thesis of Master with Geoffrey Marcy, then finished its studies of doctorate to the university of Maryland with Collège Park in 1993. Its work of thesis concerned the design of a very sensitive Spectrographe intended to detect the planets extrasolaires by measuring the variations of radial Speed of their stars relationships. Since 1999, it belongs to the scientific personnel of the Institut Carnegie of Washington.

Butler and Geoffrey Marcy divided the Médaille Henry Draper in 2001 and the Prix Beatrice Mr. Tinsley in 2002. It was named " scientist of the space of the année" by Discover Magazine in 2003.
